0:00 - Ben Hanson is Programme Lead for Housing Strategy at Hull City Council. Recently you did a presentation at the Voluntary Sector Forum about the current consultation that's taking place - the Preventing Homelessness Strategy that the council is putting together. I found that a really insightful presentation, it gave some idea as to the council's thinking and strategy on homelessness in the city. So, tell me about the strategy, what's in it, what's its scope, and why are you doing it?

1:08 - You mentioned those figures [homelessness statistics locally] at the meeting, didn't you?

2:05 - You also mentioned the people you've helped over the last 3 years, you're already helping to prevent homelessness?

2:33 - Tell me more about the consultation process you're going through.

4:07 - Has the discussion thrown up any strands that have come as a surprise to you?

6:45 - What happens at the end of the consultation period?

8:44 - It's really good to have these clear directions for the next 5 years, but to what extent do you feel the authority is able to respond to change in need? If we find a sudden peak in rough sleepers or sofa-surfers, are you able to respond as an authority?

9:58 - Tell us again how people can get in touch with you if they want to add dialogue and their voice to the Preventing Homelessness Strategy of the council.

What came through strongly [in this consultation process] is that we need to focus on things like furnishing for people who are moving off the street or from hostel provision into accommodation. … We're going to focus a lot more on affordable furniture packages, and furnished accommodation.
Ben Hanson - Programme Lead for Housing Strategy, Hull City Council.
We need to start to quantify sofa-surfing in the city. … We need to know how much of this there is in the city, and what it is we need to do to support people into more stable accommodation.

General Election 2017 - Conversations about homelessness and housing in the Humber Region.

At HumberHelp we believe the General Election is not a 'one issue' - Brexit - debate. Housing is an issue for all of us, and homelessness an issue for many.

In the run up to 8th June we'll be having conversations with parliamentary candidates, politicians and policy makers, housing and homelessness sector professionals, and those affected by housing matters. We'll be asking questions, and reflecting on homelessness and housing issues together.

Please listen to the interviews, share online, and join in the conversation.
